The Supranatural Art of Gardens
Project for 'Galeria UnB' - 2005

Introduction

Since my Spotland show, at Casa da América Latina, in 2003, I had been more and more interested in developing projects that take the gallery space into consideration. Also, working as an exhibition designer at the Brazilian Central Bank had stimulated me to think about space as a way of augmenting the communication between work and audience.

From inside the Galeria UnB one can enjoy a beautiful view of a large green area, very typical of the city of Brasília. This was the starting pointing for my project. I had decided that I wanted to exploit the intersection of two kinds of space, which I call "open" and "closed" spaces. Why? To bring inside the gallery, a dialogue between the (real and the metaphorical) elements of an open-air space and an art-space; and to use the gallery space as an arena for a debate between nature & art.

This project was also a response to two opposing feelings that I have in relation to art institutions. From one side, as audience, I always have a vague sense of emptiness when visiting museums and art galleries; they feel as if somehow life has been left out. From the other side, as an artist, I love these institutions, because they are places where it is possible to express and exploit everything; where reality can be presented, transformed and re-transformed.
