As a boy, Simon would carve the chalkstone from the Surrey Downs, the Yew and Beech from the local woodland, but in Cornwall he concentrated on the indigenous rocks, from the iron-hard Blue Elvan and Granite of St. Ives to the softer colourful Serpentine of the Lizard peninsula.
He enjoys the challenge of allowing the character of the individual stones to express themselves whilst manipulating their essential nature in order to carve his original and hand-made images.
